The Great Commission – From Resurrection to Mission and Purpose
After restoring Peter and strengthening the disciples, Jesus gathered them for one final instruction. This moment marks the transition from resurrection appearances to global mission. The words spoken by Jesus form what is commonly called the Great Commission — a calling that continues today.
This event is recorded across multiple Gospel accounts, each adding depth and understanding to the mission Jesus gave His followers.
All Authority Given to Christ
Matthew 28:18 – “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
Jesus begins by establishing authority. The mission is not based on human strength, but divine authority. The resurrection confirmed His victory over death, fear, and sin.
This authority is the foundation of Christian mission:
- Authority over fear
- Authority over doubt
- Authority over uncertainty
- Authority over every nation
Go Into All the World
Mark 16:15 – “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.”
The mission expands beyond Israel. The resurrection message is for everyone. This reflects God's heart for all people.
This calling includes:
- Sharing hope
- Encouraging faith
- Living as witnesses
- Serving others in love
Repentance and Forgiveness
Luke 24:47 – “Repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in His name to all nations.”
Luke emphasizes the message of forgiveness. The resurrection is not only victory — it is invitation. Through Christ, restoration is possible.
